The cream and terracotta buildings of Buriano have been standing proudly on a Tuscan hilltop since the 12th century. Once home to Italian aristocrats and wealthy merchants, the abandoned complex was being converted into private apartments under the guidance of Professor Nicoletta Novelli, an expert in sensitive restoration. Our challenge was to promote Buriano in a way that set out the modern benefits of the estate, while conveying a sense of its unique heritage.
A research trip to the abandoned town uncovered a rich seam of design inspiration, from heraldic crests and medieval engravings to the tattered fragments of old books and newspapers. We used these relics from the town’s past to create a strong visual language for Buriano, bringing the estate’s distinguished history back to life for a contemporary audience.
